DJB advise BEIS on the transfer of the Wave Hub to Cornwall Council

DJB has completed the transfer of the Wave Hub to Cornwall Council on behalf of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (“BEIS”).

The firm undertook the property aspects of the deal which included offshore lease work relating to the sea bed.

Wave Hub is the world’s largest and most technologically advanced grid connected site for the testing and development of offshore renewable energy technology. It comprises an onshore substation at Hayle and a subsea power cable installed on the seabed to a site leased from The Crown Estate located 15km off of the Cornish coast.

The transfer was seen as a crucial step for the UK as they seek to become an international leader in wave and maritime energy. The deal is also important for funding purposes with the European Union (EU) and private investment bodies including Australian Energy company Carnegie Clean Energy who are planning to install an array of wave energy devices at Wave Hub from next year. The transfer included input from a number of national organisations including the Crown Estate.
